Prey–predator dynamics with adaptive protection mutualism

چکیده
Prey can ease the burden of exploitation by attracting a third party that interferes with their predators. Such is case for plant-ant or aphid-ant mutualisms, where victim supplies food to ants, while ants attack drive away offenders. Since are adaptive foragers, defense services be altered alternative sources (e.g., other plants, human-supplied resource). This article explores prey-predator-ant system, using model combines predator-prey population dynamics ant optimal foraging, consume prey-supplied resources resources. Feedbacks between prey-predator and foraging leads complex dynamics. For given colony size supply rate resources, prey coexist predators at stable states, along limit cycles. Limit cycles extend scope defensive mutualism beyond point would abandon in favor under equilibrium conditions. These results highlight importance trait-mediated indirect interactions natural mutualistic–antagonistic systems, potential outcomes manipulating baits agriculture.

Oscillatory dynamics in a bacterial cross-protection mutualism.
Cooperation between microbes can enable microbial communities to survive in harsh environments. Enzymatic deactivation of antibiotics, a common mechanism of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, is a cooperative behavior that can allow resistant cells to protect sensitive cells from antibiotics. Understanding how bacterial populations survive antibiotic exposure is important both clinically and ec...
متن کاملIntegrating plant carbon dynamics with mutualism ecology.
Plants reward microbial and animal mutualists with carbohydrates to obtain nutrients, defense, pollination, and dispersal. Under a fixed carbon budget, plants must allocate carbon to their mutualists at the expense of allocation to growth, reproduction, or storage. Such carbon trade-offs are indirectly expressed when a plant exhibits reduced growth or fecundity in the presence of its mutualist....

Host-microbe symbioses play a critical role in the evolution of biological diversity and complexity. In a notably intricate system, southern pine beetles use symbiotic fungi to help overcome host-tree defenses and to provide nutrition for their larvae. We show that this beetle-fungal mutualism is chemically mediated by a bacterially produced polyunsaturated peroxide. The molecule's selective to...
متن کاملNetwork reorganization and breakdown of an ant–plant protection mutualism with elevation
Both the abiotic environment and the composition of animal and plant communities change with elevation. For mutualistic species, these changes are expected to result in altered partner availability, and shifts in context-dependent benefits for partners. To test these predictions, we assessed the network structure of terrestrial ant-plant mutualists and how the benefits to plants of ant inhabita...
متن کاملInnate and adaptive immunity in host-microbiota mutualism.
Healthy individuals live in peaceful co-existence with an immense load of intestinal bacteria. This symbiosis is advantageous for both the host and the bacteria. For the host it provides access to otherwise undigestible nutrients and colonization resistance against pathogens. In return the bacteria receive an excellent nutrient habitat. The mucosal immune adaptations to the presence of this com...
